Description of the Creation

This piece was inspired by an ancient ring currently housed at the "Luigi Bernabò Brea" Regional Archaeological Museum of the Aeolian Islands in Lipari—an important testament to the goldsmithing art of the ancient world. The museum preserves artifacts that document the millennia-long history of the Aeolian Islands.

My ring is a contemporary artistic reinterpretation of that ancient jewel; I sought to preserve the imposing shape of the bezel, the elegance of the structure, and the character of the ancient craftsmanship, while reinterpreting them through the sensibilities and techniques of modern goldsmithing.

The model that inspired me dates back to the 5th century BC—roughly 500 years before Christ—an era when Greek goldsmithing had reached levels of extraordinary refinement. Greek rings from this period were characterized by bezels that were often oval or elliptical, featuring depictions of deities and mythological figures executed with exquisite engraving.

The Mystery of the Technique

What makes this ancient jewel particularly fascinating is the extraordinary complexity of its creation.

Observing it today, one naturally wonders how a goldsmith from over two thousand years ago could achieve such precise and refined workmanship using the tools available at the time.

It is precisely this question that has fueled the allure of the artifact: the precision of the forms, the complexity of the setting, and the quality of the craftsmanship seem to require a level of technical mastery that is astonishing for the period.

My interpretation, therefore, stems from this very question:

How could an artisan, more than 2,500 years ago, create a jewel of such complexity without the technologies and equipment of modern goldsmithing?

I wanted to take up this challenge and bring that ancient concept into the present, utilizing the knowledge and techniques of a contemporary goldsmith.

It is not a simple reproduction. It is my interpretation of a masterpiece of ancient goldsmithing.
